KNOCKHILL
5/6 APRIL 2008
It has been a busy winter trying
to get the sidecar changed over to GSXR 1000 K6 engines. This involved
changing the engine cradle, the airbox to accommodate the double injectors
and the fairing to accommodate the new airbox. Neil Miller and Alan
Shand dedicated a week of their time to changing over the electrics
and we are grateful to them for suffering all those cold evenings in
the garage. To finish of the change over we borrowed Moray Firth Precision
engineering’s workshop and Alan made a very neat job of grafting
in some extra height to the fairing behind Kerr’s seat. MacGregors
Industrial Supplies mixed up a colour matched paint and we got it sprayed
in and you would never know the difference.
The team headed off on Friday
night for the first lorry trip of the year. We were all quite excited
about trying out all the changes even though the weather forecast did
not make for good reading with a 98% chance of snow.
On Saturday we checked over the
sidecar and got ready for our first practice in the afternoon. We were
just ready to drive out of the awning when Kerr discovered he could
not get any gears. What a disaster, the quickshifter had stopped working
for no apparent reason even though we had it running up through the
gears in the workshop. We checked all the connections and got it working
again. We thought we were ready to race on Sunday and got signed on
and scrutineered.
On Sunday morning we drew the
curtains on the lorry at 7am to find that winter had descended once
more and an inch of snow lay on the awning roof.

Sidecar racing or sledging –
would have been better with a bobsleigh this weekend!
