EAST
FORTUNE 13/14 OCTOBER 2007
You must
be wondering why this was still a blank!
We decided not to race in this
event as it was a North East Club meeting and not a Scottish Championship
round. This would give us more time to get the bike stripped and the
significant number of alterations started for next season.
It seems a long time from October
till March but it soon flies when you are trying to develop the sidecar.
For 2008 we are moving on to K5/K6 model GSXR 1000 engines. These run
double injectors which means we have to accommodate slightly different
throttle bodies, which in turn changes the airbox, which then affects
the fairing.
So far we have, on the advice
of BSD tuning, modified our new airbox (made by Jason Miller) to accommodate
an air filter. We are also looking at ways of calming the air down in
the box and standardising the volume. This should enable us to have
more control over tuning. We have also got Richie Foss to adapt a new
fuel fitting so that we can connect our fuel lines to the new throttle
bodies. He has also modified the engine cradle with some assistance
from Moray Firth Precision Engineering as, rather frustratingly, the
K5/K6 engine mountings are about 5mm out of line from the K4. Richie
has also replicated our bespoke brake cylinder and quick shifter bracket
in aluminium which has dropped a fair bit of weight off the old prototype.
It has also been reinforced to prevent the flex that we were getting
at the end of the season that caused some issue with getting gears.
Meanwhile Alan Shand is busy creating
a new wiring loom. Yes it’s also different! When he is finished
with that he will be press ganged into cutting up the fairing to set
in a new piece to go behind Kerr that will fit over the higher throttle
body/air box arrangement.
Finally we are in the process
of putting together a new set of wheels. This has not been without some
anguish either as the paint we put on the centres never set properly
and was kindly blasted back off by Moray Firth Precision. They also
turned them down to leave them with a beautifully machined finish which
now looks too nice to cover up. The rims are off getting anodised black
so that they will be easier to keep clean. That’ll give us a nice
construction job over Christmas.
Best wishes to you all
Kerr and Jen
